How to Calculate Tourist Tax/City Tax in Amsterdam

First, let’s understand the variables.

Variables

Nightly Rate (Including VAT) (€): This is the advertised price you see on hotel booking sites in Europe. This already includes VAT.

Note: Right now, the VAT rate on hotel accommodation in the Netherlands is 21%.

Number of Nights: The number of nights a tourist stays in a hotel.

Tourist Tax: The municipal tax tourists pay for overnight hotel accommodation. This is primarily collected to improve city services. Hotels collect this tax and then remit to the city.

Right now, the tourist tax is 12.5%. It’s calculated on room cost (excluding VAT).

Note: Amsterdam’s tourist tax is not just for international tourists; it applies to anyone staying overnight in the city who’s not officially registered as a resident of Amsterdam. That means Dutch citizens visiting from other parts of the Netherlands also pay it, while registered residents of Amsterdam are exempt.

Total Amount (Including Tourist Tax and VAT): The grand total amount that a tourist needs to pay to the hotel. Includes VAT and tourist tax.

Steps

Step 1: Calculate room cost (VAT included)

Room cost (VAT included) = Nightly rate x number of nights

Room cost (VAT included) = €150 x 3 = €450

Step 2: Remove VAT to find the base room cost

Base room cost (without VAT) = Room cost (VAT included) / (1 + VAT rate / 100)

Base room cost (without VAT) = €450 / (1 + 21/100) = €371.90

Step 3: Calculate the tourist tax

Tourist tax = Base room cost (without VAT) x tourist tax rate

Tourist tax = €371.90 x 12.5% = €46.49

Step 4: Calculate the total amount including tourist tax and VAT

Total amount = Room cost (VAT included) + tourist tax

Total amount = €150 + €46.49 = €196.49
