Let’s understand the input and output variables of this calculator.
Purchase Price (SGD) (including GST): The total price you paid at the store, already including Singapore’s 9% GST. Example: If you bought a bag for SGD 1200, this is the value you enter.
Note: You’re eligible for GST refund only when, as a tourist, you spend at least SGD 100 (including GST) at a participating retailer. This limit can be met with one receipt of SGD 100 or up to 3 receipts from the same retailer on the same day.
Note: By participating retailer, we mean the retailer must be part of the eTRS system (Electronic Tourist Refund Scheme).
Note: The limit of SGD 100 applies per retailer per day. This means you can’t combine receipts across different retailers or shops.
Refund Fee (%): The percentage of the GST portion that refund operators (like Global Blue or Global Tax Free) deduct as their service fee.
Estimated GST Refund: The net GST amount you’ll receive as a refund after deducting the refund fee.
Step 1: Calculate the GST amount paid
GST paid = Purchase price (including GST) / (GST rate / (100 + GST rate))
GST paid = SGD 1200 / (9 / 109) = SGD 99.08
Note: Right now, the GST rate in Singapore is 9%
Step 2: Calculate the refund fee
Refund fee = GST paid x refund fee%
Refund fee = SGD 99.08 x 2% = SGD 1.98
Step 3: Calculate the GST refund amount
GST refund amount = GST paid - refund fee
GST refund amount = SGD 99.08 - SGD 1.98 = SGD 97.10
