How to Calculate Road Trip Cost

Let’s understand each variable of this calculator.

Variables

Trip Distance (miles): The total length of your trip in miles.

Miles per Gallon (MPG): Your car’s fuel efficiency in MPG (miles per gallon).

Gas Price per Gallon ($): The cost of fuel per gallon.

Hotel Cost per Room per Night ($): The price of one hotel room for one night.

Number of Nights: The number of nights you’ll stay in the hotel during the trip.

Number of Rooms: The number of rooms you’ll book each night in the hotel during the trip.

If there’s no overnight stay involved, enter 0 in the hotel cost, number of nights, and number of rooms input fields.

Food Cost per Day per Person ($): The average daily food expense per day per traveler.

Number of Days: Total duration of the trip in days.

Number of Persons: Total number of travelers in the group. If you’re travelling solo, enter 1 in the input field.

Tolls/Parking ($): Estimate of other expenses like tolls, parking fee, entry fee, etc. If there’s no such expense, enter 0 in the input field.

Total Road Trip Cost: The total cost of a road trip, including gas costs, food costs, hotel costs, and other expenses.

Road Trip Cost per Person: The cost of a road trip per person.

Formula

Foremost, we need to calculate the fuel cost for the trip.

Gas cost = (Trip distance / MPG) x gas price per gallon

Gas cost = (1000 miles / 25 MPG x $3.50) = $140

Hotel cost = Hotel cost per room per night x Number of rooms x Number of nights

Hotel costs = $100 x 2 x 3 = $600

Food costs = Food cost per day per person x Number of days x Number of persons

Food costs = $40 x 4 x 5 = $800

Total road trip cost = Gas cost + Hotel cost + Food cost + Tolls/parking

Total road trip cost = $140 + $600 + $800 + $50 = $1590

Road trip cost per person = Total road trip cost / Number of persons

Road trip cost per person = $1590 / 5 = $318
