First, let’s understand the 3 variables of this calculator
Distance Travelled (miles): The total length of the journey, measured in miles. You can take this number from the odometer. Take the odometer reading at the start of a journey and then another reading at the end of the journey. The difference between the starting reading and the ending reading is the distance travelled.
Fuel Used (litres): This is the amount of petrol or diesel used during the journey. Litres are a standard unit for measuring fuel in the UK. How to measure the exact fuel used during a journey? Fill the tank to the brim at the start. Drive your journey. Refill the tank again to the brim at the end of the journey. The litres you add back is the fuel consumed during the journey or trip.
By the way, most cars these days have an onboard computer that shows fuel usage.
Car Mileage (MPG): This measures the fuel efficiency of your car. Interestingly, in the UK, while fuel is measured in litres, mileage is measured in MPG (miles per imperial gallon). 30.31 MPG means a car can cover 30.31 miles using one imperial gallon of fuel. The higher the MPG, the higher the fuel efficiency.
First, you need to convert litres into imperial gallons.
1 Imperial gallon = 4.546 litres (approximately)
1 litre = 1 / 4.546 imperial gallons (approximately)
Therefore, to convert litres into imperial gallons, simply divide the litres by 4.546.
Imperial gallons = 45 litres / 4.546 = 9.90
Car mileage (MPG) = Distance travelled / Imperial gallons used
Car mileage (MPG) = 300 miles / 9.90 imperial gallons = 30.31 MPG.
